Parker Blackwood Advisers Analyzes ASX Decline Amid U.S. Tariff Announcements

Perth, Australia – February 28, 2025 – Parker Blackwood Advisers analysts have offered insights into the current slump in the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) due to the recent announcement by the U.S. administration for new tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada. For February 25, 2025, the ASX200 index closed down 56.30 points, reducing the index by 0.68% settled at 8251.90 points. Also the broader All Ordinaries also reported a decline by 62.10 points, or 0.73%, ending at 8498.00 points.

Leigh Jamieson, Chief Executive Officer at Parker Blackwood Advisers, has spoken on the market response:
“The introduction of tariffs by President Trump has created a bit of uncertainty in global markets. The ASX has always stood up to such happenings, and therefore, one can understand the increased nervousness among investors in today’s scenario.”

As for the application of the new tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, it has been announced that they will come into force in March. This gives an even more serious mind to the market participants, who now assess the repercussions to international trade relations and economic stability.

However, there were a few who showed resilience against the overall downslide. The defensive utilities sector continued to outperform for the second consecutive day, demonstrating a changing attitude among investors towards more stable assets in the current state of flux.

Jamieson added:
“In difficult and unstable market conditions, it is important for investors to ensure that they have a diversified portfolio. Some sectors may suffer production setbacks due to geopolitical events, and others may provide some refuge and lines of growth.”
