The final distinction of the Genuine Student category is that you need to demonstrate that your primary purpose in applying for an Australian student visa is to study. Your answers must provide reasons for your situation and course selection, and the potential outcomes of taking these courses, supported by documents that back up your answer. A great statement isn’t enough to supplant a solid study plan.
The hard part for a lot of the folks who apply is determining what really matters. You have accepted a letter of offer from a university, worked several years and your own family can offer you some financial assistance – but it’s still hard to make all these words fit together in your mind.
Being self-motivated, begin with “why did you choose to study?”. With a good grasp of linkage between your background and your proposed course it’s easier to craft clear answers and select relevant evidence.
What Is the Genuine Student Requirement?
The Genuine Student (GS) requirement supersedes the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement for student visa applications made from 23 March 2024. It’s all about whether you mean what you say you’ll do – study and follow visa requirements.
Home Affairs will take everything into account, including your immigration history. One part of a student visa application is a meeting of GS. Then other requirements must still be met that is applicable to you.
Consider your GS answers and your explanation of your study choice. A reader should understand where you are now, why you have chosen this course and what you reasonably expect to gain from it.
What Questions Must You Answer?
The application covers four main question items: Information about yourself, information about Australia and the provider, information about why you are choosing this course, and information about how the course will help you. For some, there is another question: how many were they studying when they were granted the student visa?
Responses should be 150 words or less and written in English. Home Affairs does not like a new GS statement when there is information included in the application form and does not give as much credit to a statement without supporting evidence. With that word limit, it helps to plan. Create purpose in answers instead of repeating background in all answers.
Your Current Circumstances
Tell about your current circumstances precisely. This could involve your job, recent schooling, family duties and arrangements and finances. Concentrate on details that help explain your decision to study now.
An applicant who is involved in a family business, for instance, might talk about the skills that will enable him or her to assume higher responsibility in that family business. A recent graduate might also provide a description of how their selected course developed from subjects they studied in their undergraduate degree.
Do not adorn the answer with generalities about being hard working or ambitious. Summarize one thing the reader could feel, understand, and/or verify. If you do not have the same situation as another applicant, it does not mean that you don’t deserve a clear explanation.
Why You Chose This Course and Provider
Write about what you liked about the real programme. Consider its content, its internal and external requirements and how it may be assessed and tested. Make sure before applying for any features, such as placements, if there is a possibility of it existing or not, as this is not something that is given.
Now, consider two students who are applying for the same business course. Now, picture two students competing for the same business course. One wishes to acquire an understanding of a present part. Some would like to pursue a career in supply chain management. They should sound different due to the fact that their needs and reasons are different.
It’s also OK to describe the options that you considered. A suitable comparison could be about the subject content or the teaching arrangements. Whether Australia’s lifestyle is great or not isn’t enough to justify a specific course in your education path.
How the Course Will Benefit You
Connect the qualification with a realistic next step. Identify the knowledge you expect to gain and how you could use it. Keep the distinction between an aspiration and a confirmed opportunity clear.
For example, someone in marketing who’s not familiar with analytics can explain their need for such skills and the places where they could be applied in the field. Employers’ genuine commitment to a new position is a form of hope different from hope for a new position.
Don’t guarantee specific wages or job without justification. Carefully thought out explanations are more effective than statements that the qualification will change your whole future.
Other Relevant Information
Familiarise yourself with the simplest, most explicit explanations and reserve this space for situations when further explanation is desired and has not already been discussed. This may involve a career change, or a gap in academic studies or an unusual experience in a previous academic career.
Represent the essence of the explanation in terms of the facts and the facts alone. Provide details of what occurred, when it occurred and its connection to your current plans. Should there be a lapse in your studies due to illness, for instance, make mention of that without assuming a personal illness without justification.
It’s designed to inform about your application. Random success items can distract and detract from the value of the project.
What Evidence Should You Provide?
Evidence including academic records, employment history, paperwork relating to economic and previous Australian study history may be helpful. Select documents that will help answer the question(s) and adhere to instructions for your contest.
One useful way of structuring the material is to have a working list with 3 columns: the claim that you are making, a document that establishes the claim and anything mentioned that requires further explanation. Useful to find gaps before uploading files.
Assume you’re an accounts assistant: Make sure that your “work” evidence accurately reflects that. In case of referring to completed qualification, ensure that the academic record has explicit identification of the educational institution and qualification awarded.
There has to be context for evidence. A bank statement could show a balance and leave the reader wondering who the money belongs to and how it is connected with your plans. Provide accurate information on the arrangements and review the relevant financial evidence requirements for the visa you’re applying for.
How Should You Explain a Study Gap or Career Change?
An explanation of a gap/charge should clarify what actually happened. Consider a “history of education, work and other responsibilities. It’s very helpful to write it out a few times to make it easier to understand.
If you took a commerce degree and now you’re interested in studying information systems but want to work in retail, what do you need to do? If you got a commerce degree, work in retail and want to study information systems, what do you need to do? Describe the reasons for the change and preparation made. Never make an extra association with each topic of your old degree.
If you took care of a family member, went to work or ran a business, explain accurately how you did this. Don’t extend the length of time to make employment seem continuous.
The examples are not meant to be evidence that any specific project will be successful, but they are examples only. Your explanation should relate to your own situation and course you are planning.
What If You Have Studied in Australia Before?
Relevant Australian previous study can be used to assess. Home Affairs takes into account factors such as course progress, course change of provider, gap in studies, etc. History of your immigration status also plays a role as well as your previous visa conditions.
Obtain past enrolment and study records before making a new application for admission. Always check with your proposed answers to be sure a course withdrawal, transfer or interruption will not be overlooked; compare the dates.
If the plans are changed, talk about why. There are conditions for the explanation for the lack of suitable specialisation if, for instance, one discovers that a programme actually wasn’t there for the specialisation that he/she had in mind, as opposed to the case of lack because of a personal crisis. Maintain all those differences.
Can You Want Permanent Residence and Still Be a Genuine Student?
Yes. Home Affairs does accept that it is the intention of the true student to apply for permanent residence on a later date but does not prejudge their application because of this. The student visa application should still be primarily for the purpose of study.
In your plans divide things you want to study at present and things you might investigate later. Never offer a potential migration scenario as if it is a foregone conclusion and don’t design your reasoning for your course with an assumed right to stay in Australia.
How Can You Make Your Answers Clearer?
If you want to ‘trim’ the writing down, then write a first draft in your own words first. Then delete repetition and then ensure that each answer answers the question. When making a sensible study decision, it is generally sufficient to use plain language.
Read the responses as a group, along with your documents. Do the dates agree? Have you ever paid a casual employee with a permanent contract? Ever paid someone a casual rate, whose contract was on a permanent basis? Have you mentioned a placement that is not listed on the provider’s course details?
Do not copy sample answers or tales from another student. A template could help you to group up your ideas, but it cannot give you reasons for studying. Takes ownership and is comfortable with being asked and told by others what is submitted to them in your name.
When Is Professional Advice Useful?
Even for a simple education history, it may take a while to set up. If this is the case, any previous refusals and multiple course changes or indecision around applying from Australia may warrant more careful consideration prior to application.
Discussing your study plans with an immigration agent in Brisbane will help you determine which questions require attention, and determine how your study plan satisfies the visa requirements. Bring some information prepared about the course you are suggesting, academic records and history of immigration so as to focus the discussion on your situation.
Start With a Study Plan You Can Explain
Please read through before submitting your answers as if you meet you for the first time. Are they able to see the link between your background, your choice of course and your future plans? Does anyone have evidence that they can find to support the central claims that you have made?
Grand promises and garbled language is not required in a useful GS response. It should contain a candor to why you want to study supported by documentation and realistic understanding of the course you have selected.
